Synopsis

The protagonist Haneru is a middle school student who loves dancing. He can't sit still, as he even feels the rhythm of the sound of chalk in class. One day after school, Haneru Tobitatsu meets Kanon who is practicing dancing at a secret training facility. The two know the joy of dancing together with others for the first time and the happiness of seeing their own dance moves. Japan's first full-fledged dance anime, depicting coming-of-age through meeting friends and dance battles with rivals, debuts!

Episode 1

Tobitatsu Haneru took up dancing inspired by Jey, the superstar. Although short in stature, he more than makes up for it with his big moves and jumps. On this day, he heads to his usual practice grounds by parkouring his way across town. He begins practicing as soon as he gets there by looking at his reflection on the glass windows. Little did he know that he was being watched from the other side by a girl who`d also come to practice dancing, Otosaki Kanon.

Haneru asks Kanon to team up with him, only for her to run away from him. Refusing to give up, he visits the practice spot every day, but doesn`t get to meet her. It was then that he finds out about street dancing events being held at Green Square and goes there in hopes of running into Kanon. Meanwhile, the mysterious Master T shows up in front of Kanon and tells her to go watch the event.

The dance battle with Tribal Soul begins! Charged up for his first ever battle, Haneru displays his energetic and pulsating moves. Kanon, who was panicking at first, gradually grows mesmerized by Tribal Soul`s dancing and starts focusing on her own moves. She even gets a read on the rhythm and tries to imitate her opponents by getting in sync with the music.

Haneru and Kanon had finally teamed up, but Kanon was worried that their moves weren`t cool enough. When she practices isolation—the basic art of moving only certain parts of your body—during her dance lessons at school, she convinces Haneru to make it a part of their training. Haneru, however, isn`t too good at the basics and struggles with it.

Unable to practice at their usual spot, Haneru and Kanon get dragged off by Mizuki to Tribal Soul`s hangout. But there, Kumo tells them not to make light of dancing. Haneru shows off his newly-acquired isolation skills and his special jumps, but he can`t get Kumo to bat an eyelid. Things get gloomy as Haneru and Kanon are at a loss as to how to improve before the tournament.

The day of the rematch with Tribal Soul finally arrives. Surprisingly, that ends up being the very first match up of the tournament. Haneru and Kanon get fired up and head into the dance battle. The isolation practice pays dividends as the two show off their sharp moves and get in sync with the music, finishing their routine off with Haneru`s explosive jumps!

As the first day of practice since forming the new team comes about, Haneru and Kanon head to Tribal Soul`s usual spot with renewed enthusiasm. They all meet up and formally introduce themselves, but Haneru`s desire to dance freely conflicts with Kumo`s instructions to warm up properly, causing immediate discord between the two.

Having been invited to participate in Dance Road, Haneru`s full of motivation. The members of Tribe Cool Crew decides to use a new song, and begin creating a routine for it. When it turns out that they don`t have a confirmed center, Haneru volunteers for the role.

A dance contest will be held at Kanon`s school festival. Ayumu enters her into the contest without telling her, which makes her panic. She later tries to go get her entry withdrawn, but that`s when her homeroom teacher finds out about her street dancing activities.

Someone`s been watching Tri-Cool and they know it. When Haneru decides to chase after them to find out who it is, they show their agility and reflexes as they try to make their escape. Haneru finally catches them, though, only to find out that it`s a girl named Momiji. She`s a descendent of the tengu, and more shockingly for Haneru and gang, claims to be Yuzuru`s fiancée.

The day of the Dance Road auditions is finally arrives. The map in their invite leads the members of Tribe Cool Crew to a Sunday morning business district, but they find nobody there. Suddenly, the Jey logo on the invite starts glowing to show them the way.

Yuji`s three-man team, the Explosive Machine Guns, take the stage to perform after Tribe Cool Crew. Their lightning moves are so exhilarating that the audience can`t take their eyes off them. Haneru and Kanon were no exceptions, as they were utterly entranced by their steps.

Tribe Cool Crew decide to throw a party on Christmas Eve, but not only does Kumo refuse to participate, he also takes the day off from practice. Finding this strange, the rest of them decide to to figure out where he`s going. They tail him on the day only to reach a nursery school, where they find out that Kumo was helping out the teachers there after a chance meeting.

During practice one day, Kanon`s told to try coming up with a special move that makes use of her strengths. As usual, she starts overthinking it, forcing Ayumu to tell her off.

Haneru and Kanon follow Mizuki to a construction site, where she and Kumo once used to practice. She wanted to take one last look at the place since she heard it was getting torn down.

At long last, Jey El`s world tour makes its way to Japan, and Haneru can hardly wait for the concert. With their tickets in hand, every member of Tribe Cool Crew is excited for the day to come. At the same time, Master T catches wind of some very ominous news: that someone hired a sniper to take Jey out.

With the theme for the second round of Dance Road being "fighting," the members of Tribe Cool Crew agree with Haneru`s suggestion that it refers not to dance battles, but having the courage to stand up to anything. They practice hard to express that with their dancing until the day of the second round comes around.

Haneru and Kanon end up fighting over which of "Squid`s Whistle" and "Squirt Serenade," their preferred snacks respectively, is better. It`s a trivial argument, but having let the chance to apologize slip by, the two find it hard to make up. And after hearing about it, Mizuki and Yuzuru get into the same argument and, instead of smoothing things over between the two, only make things worse. What`s more, Yuji appears in front of Haneru and Kanon, and turns it into the worst-case scenario.

While Tribe Cool Crew makes plans for the upcoming Dance Road, Haneru suddenly pulls off an incredible move that startles everyone. He calls it an evolved moonwalk, a galaxy walk. But when he tries to repeat it, he can`t. Haneru had no idea how he`d pulled it off the first time. Thus, he practices the move, and even gets Kanon to help him out, but nothing seems to work. That`s when Mr. Wakui visits them, who`d remembered his younger days, when he`d frequently fever at the disco.

A stranger calls out to Kanon on her way back from school. Turns out he`s the president of a talent agency, and that he looked into popular Internet sensation Rhythm to find out that it was Kanon behind the mask. Now, he wants to recruit her to his agency.

Hiroto, Haneru`s classmate, is always at his throat, and even ends up angering him when he says he doesn`t want to watch him dance.

Tribe Cool Crew has to take a road trip to the location of the next round of Dance Road, so they get in a car and head for Lake Suwa. They`re in high spirits when they leave, but heavy rain along the way forces them to take shelter in an inn together along with Master T, who`d come to pick them up.

The Dance Road road trip brings Tribe Cool Crew to Lake Suwa. Immediately, Haneru asks Kanon to go explore the area with him, which is when they ruin to the dancer pair of Lui and Moe.

It`s finally time for the third round of Dance Road. Kanon pumps herself up for it and even debuts a new outfit. When Tribe Cool Crew follow the Jey symbols again, they reach a massive tower covered by fog—the venue for this round.

After getting through the first two trials in the third round of Dance Road, Tribe Cool Crew find Master T waiting for them in the final trial. They have to watch Master T`s dance, memorize it in one go, and reproduce it perfectly.

At Yuzuru`s suggestion, Tribe Cool Crew decides to hold a cherry blossom viewing party. Yuzuru attaches great importance to this event each year, and this year is no different, as he plans to once again prepare the ultimate culinary experience, the "Cherry Viewing Hundred-Layer Lunch."

One day, Haneru meets a grade schooler named Satoshi. He`s the younger brother of Yuji, Haneru`s rival in dance. This surprises Haneru, because it just happened so that the two of them were about to face off in a dance battle.

Mizuki has been looking awfully tired of late, so much so that she even falls asleep while doing her stretches. She`s been busy because a friend had asked her to train a group of beginner dancers with an average age in the seventies. While juggling that, her usual job, and practice with Tri-cool, she also gets inundated with requests for advice from her friend, wiping her out completely.

Kanon and her sister, Kimika, arrive at a tea salon, where they run into Yuzuru enjoying his cup of tea. Both him and Kimika have come looking for the legendary tea that the cafe`s owner, Ms. Otsuru, prepares: the Miracle Diamond. However, a pair of robbers show up out of nowhere, making those inside the cafe panic.

When Haneru and gang head to Green Square, they run into some unexpected dancers: Lui and Moe, whom they`d met during the third round of Dance Road. But their dance is different now, and the audience cheers wildly for them.

Ayumu starts to think Kanon likes Haneru, and heads to Tri-Cool`s practice spot to observe the two of them. After jumping to the conclusion that the two of them have yet to realize their true feelings, she decides to give them a push.

Momiji comes to the group wanting to become a dancer, with Haneru given the stressful task of teaching her the basics. As Haneru struggles to keep her under control by day, at night, Momiji investigates Green Square's arena, sensing a dark energy. The next day, as Momiji becomes determined to learn how to snap her fingers for a salute, she takes Haneru's lessons more seriously and manages to jam well with just isolation moves. After seeing Jey's moves, however, she decides she can't match up to him and quits dancing, but not before learning to snap her fingers. Before leaving for the mountains, Momiji explains how she felt an ominous aura.

One day, Kanon has a strange dream. All of the Tri-Cool members except her get blown away by her own moves, and for some reason, that makes Kanon anxious. She goes to practice with Tri-Cool as usual, but she`s somewhat out of step with the rest of them. The more she tries to get things back on track, the worse it gets. She feels strange after that, too, while dancing at Green Square or at school.

By speaking to her mother and Team Sakura, Kanon thinks about how to face her team, after which she begins practicing with Haneru again. Meanwhile, Kumo, Mizuki, and Yuzuru watch Tri-Cool`s videos, research Kanon`s moves, and begin to practice too.

Hinata and Manabi of Team Sakura had been invited to have a practice session together by Yuji. Wanting a new challenge, they suggest to the Explos1ve Machine Guns that they should dance together, but once they do, they find out that they`re not a very good fit.

Team Sakura and the Explos1ve Machine Guns looking for new challenges gives Tribe Cool Crew a rather rude awakening. Meanwhile, the forbidden taboo, Crowd High, begins to gain massive popularity around the world. Unable to take this lying down, Haneru pleads with the rest of the group to get more pumped up.

With the next round of Dance Road almost upon them, Tri-Cool focus on practice, but that`s when Kumo goes and gets himself hurt. The injury is diagnosed as needing one whole month to heal, meaning Kumo can`t participate in Dance Road. Haneru and gang promise to Kumo that they`ll definitely make it through the next round together, but they can`t figure out a way to cover for his absence.

As the teams assemble for the fourth round of Dance Road, the competitors' fears about the legitimacy of the contest are allieviated when Jey speaks directly to them via hologram. As the contest gets underway, Team Sakura and Explos1ve MAchine Guns reveal they have merged together to form Blossom Bullets, impressing everyone with their debut performance. Encouraged by Kumo's words, Haneru comes to understand that Tribe Cool Crew's 'change' comes from how much they've evolved since they formed, deciding they should just perform the way they are now. Both Tribe Cool Crew and Blossom Bullets make it through to the next and final round of Dance Road

With Crowd High becoming widespread, even to the point that Haneru's school has to ban it after a student gets hurt attempting it, Haneru confronts Lui and Moe, who suggest he try it for himself. After some deliberation speaking with Kuro, Haneru agrees to give Crowd High a try, which comes as a shock to Kanon.

After practising the Crowd High dance from Lui and Moe, Haneru starts to take a liking to it, prompting an objection from Kanon, who believes Crowd High makes people forget why they want to dance. Just then, Jey contacts Haneru and the others, telling them of the final theme, "Spirit", with Dance Road's final to take place on his personal island, Bright Island. The next day, Haneru decides to tell Lui and Moe that he won't adopt Crowd High, as he wants to one day dance alongside Jey.

Following Kumo's recovery, the gang head to the beach for a training camp. There, Kumo comes across a mysterious girl named Hotaru who once witnessed Jey dancing on the very same beach, making the ocean shine. Upon checking into their hotel, Kumo learns that Hotaru was the owner's daughter who had been gone for ten years ago. Wanting to fulfil his promise to Hotaru, Kumo asks the gang to help make the ocean shine with their moves. Together, the gang performs moves similar to Jey and make the ocean light up, which is later revealed to be caused by water fireflies reacting to their dance. The next day, Kumo is surprised to see Hotaru alive and well as a married woman, leaving Kumo to wonder who the girl he met really was.

Kanon heads to the shopping mall to buy a birthday present for her mom, where she and Ayumu run into Team Sakura. They get dragged into a performance contest, where the living embodiment of evil, Kumodeon, proves to be the X-factor.

Haneru`s summer homework isn`t getting anywhere. Koji proposes that the three of them work on a research project together.

With it being summer festival season, Haneru`s dad is all fired up about manning the drums during the Bunchaka Festival. But Haneru doesn`t want to help this year because he wants to focus on dance. This sets off a huge argument between the two, making the mood in the Tobitatsu home stormy in the middle of summer.

As Tribe Cool Crew and Blossom Bullets all set off to Jey's private island for the final round of Dance Road, Yuzuru brings along Momiji, who has been investigating the disappearance of Crowd High trendsetters. Arriving on the island, a man named Nelson gives everyone a tour, telling how Jey had taken care of him and several over children from poverished countries, before assembling with the other finalists. There, the project's lead Mabel reveals Jey to be a Dance Roid robot that replaced the real Jey after he fell into a coma five years ago, which does not settle well with Haneru. Mabel further reveals the purpose of Dance Road is to recruit ghost dancers who will update the Dance Roid with new moves. As everyone is given the night to decide if they wish to proceed, Master T takes Haneru and the others to see the real Jey in his comatose state, further driving their desire to dance. The next day, the Dance Road finals are suddenly crashed by Lui, Moe, and the other Crowd High trendsetters, as Gallagher announces his plan to take over Dance Road.

Gallagher, believing the Jey El Project is simply self-service, takes Mabel hostage and pressures the Dance Road contestants into a dance battle against the Crowd High trendsetters. Just then, Momiji appears, revealing the secrets behind Crowd High, including the adverse effects on the body and mind, though is forced to flee before she can explain what Gallagher is scheming. As Momiji is approached by Hewitt, the dance battle commences, with many of the teams falling under the power of Crowd High. Kumo and Mizuki step up to face Lui and Moe once again, winning against them after the physical toll on Lui and Moe's bodies finally affects them. However, Gallagher then brings out his top trendsetters, Gold and Silver.

As Haneru and Haneru's friends and family miss having them around, Koji and Ayumi bond over their love of seeing their friends dance. Back at the island, Momiji learns of a secret plan that Gallagher is planning while Lui and Moe think back to their original style of dance. Just as Blossom Bullets step up to battle Gold and Silver, Gallagher brings out some robots to prove the effectiveness of Crowd High without the need for any spirit. Undettered, Koji brings out a seemingly unending dance move, managing to win out against the robots. However, before he is due to fight against Gold and Silver, he appears to incur a foot injury.

Blossom Bullets and Tribe Cool Crew show Gold, Silver, and Gallagher that they`ve inherited Jey`s moves of spirit.
