Synopsis
202X A.D., a future beyond Initial D. Self-driving cars are in widespread use in Japan, and public roadways are used for auto racing. In such an era, a race called MFG has become popular around the globe. Porsche, Ferrari, Lamborghini… Participants are invited to race with their fastest cars. One such participant, a British racing school graduate, Kanata Rivington, returns to Japan to achieve his goal.

After making up a bunch of places in the death zone, Kanata enters the final sector, but with the long straight at the end of the lap highlighting the 86's main weakness, can he hold on to his current position all the way to the checkered flag?

Kanata managed to haul the 86 up to unexpected heights at Odawara Pikes Peak, but the next race is on a course that is a lot flatter with fewer downhill sections where he can make up for his car's lack of power, so it's time to tune his ride!

Qualifying begins for the second race of the season, which is set to take place at Lake Ashinoko. With Kanata set to do his run on a later day, other drivers get their moment to shine.

Ren's mother discovers the secret to Kanata's prodigious talent and the two reminisce about his much-missed mother, Katherine. Meanwhile, Sawatari's monster lap has unsettled the drivers who are still yet to set a time.
