Synopsis
Love is unusual for Koizumi Risa and Ootani Atsushi, who are both striving to find their ideal partner in high school—172 cm tall Koizumi is much taller than the average girl, and Ootani is much shorter than the average guy at 156 cm. To add to their plights, their crushes fall in love with each other, leaving Koizumi and Ootani comically flustered and heartbroken. To make matters worse, they're even labeled as a comedy duo by their homeroom teacher due to their personalities and the stark difference in their heights, and their classmates even think of their arguments as sketches. Lovely★Complex follows Koizumi and Ootani as they encourage each other in finding love and become close friends. Apart from their ridiculous antics, they soon find out an unexpected similarity in their music and fashion tastes. Maybe they possess a chemistry yet unknown, but could love ever bloom between the mismatched pair?

Episode 1
Freshman Year Summer! I'll Definitely Find a Boyfriend!
170 cm tall Koizumi Lisa and 156 cm short Ōtani Atsushi have been quarelling ever since they entered Maido Academy, to the point that their feud is compared to the Tigers-Giants rivalry. Lisa had falled for Suzuki Ryouji at first sight, Ōtani had a crush on Lisa`s friend Tanaka Chiharu, so he arranges a merry triple date. However, they both get rejected because of their complexes about their tallness and shortness, respectively. In the end, Suzuki and Chiharu discover they have feelings for each other... On the other hand, Lisa and Ōtani discover that they essentially have the same complex and start a of who can get a partner first.

The Ex-Girlfriend Love Triangle!?
Lisa and Ōtani both love the singer Umibōzu. Since they managed to get tickets for the christmas concert, they make plans to go together. That`s when Ōtani`s ex-girlfriend Kanzaki Mayu hits him up with a request to meet her on christmas day. Cue a flustered Ōtani. Seeing Ōtani like that, Lisa graciously removes herself and decides to go to the concert alone. The day of the concert, Lisa is alone in a city overflowing with couples. The person that keeps flashing through her heart is Ōtani, who`s always stuck around with her. When she`s in the deepest pit of sadness, Ōtani runs up to Lisa. Saying that he needs prioritize the promise he`s already made, he takes Lisa`s hand and a warm affection courses through Lisa. But right then, a tall male figure suddenly appears and embraces Lisa!

A Guy You Like or a Guy from the Past?
The tall handsome guy who suddenly embraced Lisa was an old childhood friend of hers, Fukagawa Haruka. It`s Valentine`s Day. Lisa can`t decide if she wants to give Ōtani chocolates. Ōtani dismissively says that he`d take politeness chocolates. While she puts on a defiant front, Lisa`s actually happy. Haruka then makes his appearance and gets in a fight with his love rival, Ōtani. Ōtani comes to the irritating realization that Lisa and Haruka look good together just standing there, and even rejects Lisa`s chocolate. That chocolate then ends up with Haruka. The next day, Lisa apologizes to Ōtani who`s looking all depressed. They both quip that it was just politeness chocolate, and they end up getting a little closer.

Kiss! I've Fallen For You!
It`s the new spring semester, which means being a sophomore. The love rival Haruka ends up being in the class next door, and Lisa is relieved to be in the same class as Ōtani again. Ōtani is pouring all his energy into basketball, so Lisa buys wrist bands for him. Not being able to be honest about her feelings, she can only give him the present as an extension of their usual quarelling. Annoyed at herself, Lisa gets down because her unlikeable personality. That`s when the cute Kotoboku Seiko, the polar opposite of Lisa, makes an appearance. Of all the things to do, she suddenly kisses Ōtani. Aghast, Lisa is cast down to the bottom of hell...

Send Forbidden Love Flying!
After Seiko stole a kiss from him, Ōtani is absolutely smitten. On top of that, Lisa has grown and is now 172 cm tall, widening the height difference to Ōtani even further. Then Ōtani sprains his finger during basketball practice and Seiko nurses him in the nurse`s office. Being all alone in there, Seiko throws herself onto Ōtani. ...but then, Seiko is actually a boy named Seishirō. Seeing Seiko go all in for the person they love despite everything is a wake-up call for Lisa. Internally, she declares that she will stop denying her feelings and admit that she loves Ōtani.

A Maiden's Determination! Love-Love Confession Plan!!
Even though all her friends are helping Lisa confess her feelings, Ōtani is so dense in that regard that he doesn`t get it. Even worse, Ōtani doubles down on his cluelessness and asks her who she likes so he can help with the confession. It`s Lisa`s birthday. Ōtani asks Lisa to come to the station skyrise. As his present, he secured two special seats just for them to watch the fireworks from there. That kind gesture deepens her feelings for him even more, and Lisa blurts out her confession. "...I... I love you Ōtani!"

Abandon Ship! The Worst Confession of Love Ever!!
Ōtani takes Lisa`s confession of her feelings as a joke. Lisa is devastated that he doesn`t even consider her a viable romantic partner. After the school festival is over, Ōtani finds Lisa in an empty classroom with tears streaming down her face. While he tries to console her, it only ends up making it worse for Lisa. Riled up, Lisa burst out asking why he can`t realize that her love interest is Ōtani himself. Even the dense Ōtani has no choice but to slowly realize that Lisa likes him. That`s when Lisa realizes there`s no way to go back anymore...

Beyond Hope! Big Heartbreak!!
Lisa is rattled by the fact that the nature of her relationship with Ōtani has changed. The two of them can`t even talk until the first morning of their school trip. Ōtani requests a little time to think things over. Their school trip takes them to Hokkaido. Lisa and Ōtani end up by themselves in a gift shop where Ōtani gives her his answer. He can`t suddenly see her as his girlfriend. When he apologizes, Lisa acts tough, but after she runs to Nobuko, her tears won`t stop.

Back From the Dead! Aim For the Girlfriend Spot!!
The rejected Lisa decides to go back to just friends with Ōtani in order to not worry Nobuko and her other friends. It`s the second day of the school trip. As chance would have it, they run into Umibōzu who`s on vacation with his family. Both of them are awestruck. When Lisa asks Umibōzu`s wife how they met, she reveals that they were highschool sweethearts who once broke up, only to get back together some time later and got married. Those words give Lisa courage and she decides to accept her feelings. She tells Ōtani that since she likes him, she`s cancelling reverting everything back "just friends". Thus the two of them settle at "more than friends, less than lovers".

Face Off Against the Ex?! Operation Breast Exposure!!
Lisa and Ōtani are slated to go to a christmas party. This party is a reunion of his middle school basketball team and Ōtani`s ex-girlfriend Kanzaki is who invited him. However, she unexpectedly cancels and doesn`t show up. At the party, Lisa asks Ōtani`s old teammates about Ōtani and Kanzaki`s past. Apparently Ōtani confessed his feelings to Kanzaki after being locked into the gym equipment room. Based on that, Nobuko and her friends arrange for Lisa and Ōtani to be locked into their gym equipment room. When history doesn`t repeat itself for Lisa, she loses hope. Meanwhile, a lone Kanzaki gloomily looks up at the christmas sky...

It`s the new year and Kanzaki invites Ōtani to a basketball tournament. What`s more, she`s just broken up with her boyfriend, so their classmates scheme to get her back together with Ōtani. Lisa does everything to prevent this. On the day of the tournament, Kanzaki requests that she`d like to meet Ōtani by himself next time. Seeing that, Lisa leaves the gym, explaining she doesn`t belong there. As she is crying by herself, Ōtani suddenly appears before Lisa. She cannot understand why he would have come to see her just then...

Ōtani`s non-challant "Gimme some valentine`s day chocolates" makes Lisa jump with joy. But Ōtani still doesn`t understand Lisa`s feelings whatsoever. After Nakao explains to him how much effect a single word from him has on Lisa, Ōtani realizes what he did. When Lisa comes to hand him her crush chocolate, Ōtani says he`s not in a position to accept them. Throwing the chocolates at him, Lisa says she doesn`t care because that the crush chocolate is just a reflection of her true feelings. Could Ōtani`s emotions be quavering?

Lisa declares that she will celebrate her love with Mighty-sensei. But in her heart, she still hadn`t fully given up on Ōtani. Mighty gently consoles the grief-stricken Lisa and she cries into his chest. Seeing this, Ōtani freezes in his tracks. After classes are over, Ōtani and Mighty meet, as he`s become the substitue advisor for the basketball team. Mighty muses that he might take Lisa for himself. Ōtani blurts out that he doesn`t like Koizumit that way at all. Of course Lisa overhears this, and the chasm between her and Ōtani widens yet again.

Maity-Magic! How To Metamorphose Love?!
Twice Lisa`s been rejected by Ōtani. Mighty provokes Ōtani after basketball practice, to which he irritatedly replies "I`m the one Lisa likes!" Is Ōtani actually jealous? Mighty pressures Ōtani by asking him if he doesn`t care if someone were to take away Lisa, despite her undying devotion to him. Ōtani has no answer. Lisa, on the other hand, is wishing to get back to being just friends with Ōtani. If being open with her feelings for him is causing problems, she`d rather be friends like before. Once again, the emotions of the two start to move in opposite directions.

Iron Fists of Love! Catch My Female Spirit Ball!!
Lisa and Ōtani have returned to just being friends. Though they are just friends, Lisa tries her best to keep her love inside herself protected. The final tournament for Ōtani`s basketball team draws near, but the first match is impossible, as they`re facing last years champions. When Ōtani immediately gives up, Lisa yells at him! In that moment, it dawns on Ōtani that Lisa`s actually getting passionate for his sake. After the match, Ōtani confesses that he needs Koizumi to function. But Lisa is asleep, snoring loudly. It looks like these two keep missing each other in the crucial moments.

The Best Birthday In History
Everybody is getting together for Lisa`s birthday party. While Ōtani is absent from the party, Lisa is having a blast with her friends. She remembers last year`s birthday and that`s when she realizes, no matter how much fun she`s having, if Ōtani is not there, it`s "just not right". Right that moment, a text from Ōtani arrives. Unbelievably, he`d been hiding behind a building. When they`re alone, Ōtani confesses that it`s "just not right" when Lisa`s not there. He follows up with a kiss! Under the fireworks, Lisa`s love finally got through to Ōtani.

Sudden Collapse!! First Date Begins With a String of Bad Luck
Finally a happy couple, Lisa and Ōtani go on a date to the World Champtionship in Atheletics. But the date is horrible, with being late, forgetting bags, and more. Then, Lisa randomly remembers Ōtani`s graceful ex-girlfreind Kanzaki. And what a surprise, when she returns from getting drinks, Kanzaki is right there. Lisa instinctively tries to run away. But Ōtani introduces her as his girlfriend, which causes Lisa to cry tears of happiness. But right after that, they meet Ōtani`s neighbor Mimi. The moment he had introduced her as Lisa as his girlfriend, Mimi begins to emit an aura of jealousy.

Declaration of War!! Dangerous Pretty Girl Burning With Jealousy!!
The first time for Lisa to be in Ōtani`s room! But there, she`s suddenly confronted by Mimi who declares that she will take Ōtani from her. Having had a crush on Ōtani since she was a little girl, Mimi has always been acting like a godo girl in front of him. But after having Lisa come crash into her world like that, Mimi gets flustered and shows more and more of her real self to Ōtani. On the other hand, she is impressed that Lisa also held on to her feelings for that long. Lisa and Ōtani`s bond grows even stronger. But while looking at the students` future plan questionaire, Nakano-sensei mutters "I guess that means the Tigers-Giants rivalry will actually come to an end".

Foreboding Break Up?! Risa’s and Otani’s Separate Paths.
Lisa is surprised to find out that Ōtani wants to go to college. Will they be split apart by this? The topic of the future was starting to cause subtle rifts amongst all the friends. Nobuko plans to go to Hokkaido for junior college. This means that it would put a big distance between herself and Nakao. When she realizes that Nakao really doesn`t want to be separated from her, Nobuko questions her own plans. Seeing this, Nakao puts on a poor act, trying to convice Nobuko to go to Hokkaido. Taking his kindness to heart, Nobuko decides to stay committed to her plans, for the sake of Nakao as well. At the airport, Nakao and Nobuko reconfirm their feelings for each other. Lisa and Ōtani are relieved as they are assured these two will be fine.

Otani Declares A Catastrophic Collapse!!
Pursuing his dream of becoming a grade school teacher, Ōtani begins going to cram school. Lisa is lonely as Ōtani is too busy with his studies, and she begins working at a family restaraunt. That`s where she meets and rapidly gets close with a Umibōzu fan called Kohori. One day, Ōtani sees Kohori kiss Lisa! When Ōtani lays into Lisa, she calms him down with the explanation that Kohori kissed her while she was sleeping. But then Lisa agrees to go to a live Umibōzu concert with Kohori. Outside, after the concert is over, Ōtani catches her cheating on him. He tells her that he wants to break up.

To Each Their Own!! Everyone Has Their Own Passion.
Ōtani told Lisa he wants to break up. Lisa repents and admits that it was her fault. Ōtani also admits that he`s not without blame as he didn`t make any time for her. After reconfirming that they still mean so much to each other, they make up on the night of a white christmas. Suzuki failed his entrance exams! Starting in April, Suzuki and Chiharu will be apart. Suzuki tells Chiharu to jut go to her first choice school and find a new boyfriend. Hearing this, Chiharu goes into a rage. But Suzuki merely said this because he had the best interest at heart for her future. Once she finds that out, Chiharu makes up with Suzuki.

Together Forever!!
The day of the entrance exams. Lisa and Ōtani have overslept. What`s more, a huge blizzard has shut down all traffic completely. Lisa grabs Ōtani by the hand and by sprinting through back alleys, they make make it just in time. After the exams are over, Ōtani and Lisa go on a daate. That`s when they see Mimi working during a shoot. Lisa is impressed by her professional attitude. Additionally, the job of the stylist makes a deep impression on her. Thus, Lisa realizes that that`s what she wants to do in the future. Though he was sweating the entire way there, Ōtani also manages to pass his entrance exams.
